The Club
This club operates as a typical tennis club, but with no dedicated physical facilities. All functions of the typical tennis club are arranged through the electronic medium of the Internet, and hence the name 'Virtual Tennis Club'. It reaches nearly 100 membership enthusiasts, and at the same time provides a community function in making extensive tennis related information available to the public in the Greater Victoria area. The website catalogues about 44 public tennis locations in the Victoria area, including four indoor facilities. The club has existed since 1999, continues to grow, and is concluding operating partnerships with other groups for the benefit of all tennis enthusiasts in the Greater Victoria area.
Facility
This club wastes no time looking after 'brick and mortar' facilities, but rather schedules all their tennis activities on public courts in the Victoria area, of which there are many, both inside and outside. Public tennis courts abound in the Victoria area, with about 44 locations in all, with anywhere from one to 7 courts. The prime indoor locations are Cedar Hill with four courts, Oak Bay with seven courts, Panorama with four courts, and Pearkes with two courts.
Programs
There are many programs of a social, competitive and instructional nature. Typically in the summer, there is a Saturday morning mix and match, while on Tuesday and Thursday nights there is mixed tennis on a booked basis at the Ocean Pointe Resort courts. Through the winter, there is weekend mixed tennis on Saturday or Sunday, depending on the best block bookings obtained, while an organized 'tennis challenge' takes place once a month at a predetermined indoor location. Special clinics and the occasional top name match round out the repertoire of tennis events. Count on a social being attached to many of these interesting and fun tennis events. All communication to set up events and socials is conducted through the website with a special email system, making it easy to send out weekly notices of coming events. Member information is automatically entered into the club database when members join the club on-line, and automatically updated when changes are entered over time. All members can search this database with a number of variables to choose good tennis partners for whatever type of recreational match they are planning.
